Vittorio Gassman, Knight Grand Cross, OMRI (Italian pronunciation: [vitˈtɔːrjo ˈɡazman]; born Vittorio Gassmann; 1 September 1922 – 29 June 2000),[1] popularly known as Il Mattatore, was an Italian actor, director and screenwriter.[2] He was born in Genoa. Gassman was known as "the Laurence Olivier of Italy".
Gassman was known for his movie roles Il sorpasso (1962), La Grande Guerra (1962), I mostri (1963), L'Armata Brancaleone (1966), Profumo di donna (1974) and C'eravamo tanto amati (1974).
From 1952 to 1954, he was married to actress Shelley Winters.
Gassman died on 29 June 2000 in Rome from a heart attack at the age of 77.[3]
