The 2018 California gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the governor of California. Then-incumbent Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom was elected the next governor of California.[1][2]

Background
In February 2015, while Gavin Newsom was lieutenant governor, he announced he would run for governor in 2018, to succeed term limited governor Jerry Brown.[3][4]
In mid-2017, businessman John H. Cox announced his candidacy for governor in 2018. After previously running for public office many times.[5][6]
Election results
On November 6. 2018, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom defeated republican candidate and businessman John H. Cox, in a wide and large margin.[1][2][7][8]
Inauguration
Newsom became the 40th governor of California on January 7, 2019.[9][10]
