They are named after Shinzo Abe, who was Prime Minister of Japan from 2012 to 2020.[1] Abe's successor, Yoshihide Suga continued the policies and goals of the Abe administration, including Abenomics.[2] In 2025, newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also promised to continue Abenomics.

Abenomics is based on: monetary easing from the Bank of Japan, fiscal stimulus through government spending, and structural reforms.[3] It has been seen as a "mix of reflation, government spending and a growth strategy.[4]
