The arrondissement of Pithiviers is an arrondissement of France, in the Loir-et-Cher department of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its capital is the city of Pithiviers.

History

When the Loiret department was created on 1800, the arrondissement of Pithiviers was part of that original department.[2]

The arrondissement was eliminated in 1926 but it was made an arrondissement again in 1942.

Geography

The arrondissement of Pithiviers is the most northern of the arrondissements of the Loiret department. It is the smallest arrondissement of the department, 1,198.1 square kilometres (462.6 square miles) and the one with fewest people living in it, with 63,280 inhabitants.

It is bordered to the north by the Essonne department, to the east by the Seine-et-Marne department, to the southeast by the arrondissement of Montargis, to the south by the arrondissement of Orléans and to the west by the Eure-et-Loir department.
