Buffalo is a city in Wilson County, Kansas, United States. In 2020, 217 people lived there.[3]

History

Buffalo was created in 1867.[4] It took its name from Buffalo Creek, which was named after the American bison. The bison is often called the buffalo.[5]

The first store in Buffalo opened in 1869. The first hotel opened in 1870. Buffalo grew in 1886 when the Missouri Pacific Railroad was built through it.[6] Buffalo was incorporated as a city in 1898.[7]

Geography

Buffalo is at 37°42′34″N 95°41′49″W (37.709569, -95.696967).[8] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.32 square miles (0.83 km2). All of it is land.[2]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 217 people, 93 households, and 56 families living in Buffalo. Of the households, 83.9% owned their home and 16.1% rented their home.

The median age was 44.5 years. Of the people, 94.5% were White, 0.5% were Native American, 0.9% were from some other race, and 4.1% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the people.[3][9]

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 232 people, 95 households, and 70 families living in Buffalo.[10]

Education

Buffalo is a part of USD 387 Altoona-Midway. The Altoona-Midway High School mascot is the Jets.[11]

Buffalo High School closed in 1958 because of school unification. The Buffalo High School mascot was the Pirates.[12]
