The Buru Quartet is a series of four books written by Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The novels are:

The books were published between 1980 and 1988. Indonesian dictator Suharto banned the books. The next president B.J. Habibie also banned them. In 2000, the Indonesian government stopped banning the books so people in Indonesia could read them legally.[1]

Story

The novels tell the story of the Indonesian National Awakening Movement between 1898 and 1918. The main character is Minke. He is born in 1900, the son of a regent. Minke is educated by the Dutch. He is based on an early Indonesian journalist named Raden Tirto Adhi Soerjo.
