At the at the bust of Robert E. Lee, on median of Monroe Street, downtown, there have been acts of vandalism (a form of activism). The statue has been the centrepoint of arguments in the community since at least 2018.[7] And at the monument there have been other protests.[8] The statue was commissioned in 1966 from a sculptor called Aldo Pero (from Italy) and cost $6,000 (USD).[9] On August 13, 2004, Fort Myers was hit hard by Hurricane Charley.[verification needed]
