Horatio Gates (1726 - 1806) was an American general during the American Revolutionary War. He fought for the Continental Army and is credited with the decisive American victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.

During the earlier French and Indian War, he fought along with George Washington against the French as an officer in the British Army.
However, Gates also lost to British General Charles Cornwallis at the Battle of Camden in 1780. He had a child named Robert. He led the Americans at the battle of Saratoga
