An ionic liquid is a liquid made mostly of ions. The term is sometimes used to just mean room-temperature ionic liquids, which are liquid at below 100 °C (212 °F). Molten salts are another type of ionic liquid.[1]

Ionic liquids are sometimes called "designer solvents", as an ionic liquid be prepared with specific different cations and anions to produce liquids with specific chemical and physical properties.[2]

The first room-temperature ionic liquid was ethylammonium nitrate.[1]
