Kostroma Oblast (Russian: Костромска́я о́бласть, Kostromskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia. Specifically, it is an oblast. Its administrative center (capital city) is the city of Kostroma. Its population as of the 2010 Census is 667,562.[8] It was created in 1944 on territory taken from bordering Yaroslavl Oblast.
Textile industries have been in Kostroma Oblast since the early 18th century. Its major historic towns include Kostroma, Sharya, Nerekhta, Galich, Soligalich, and Makaryev.

Geography
Kostroma Oblast borders Vologda Oblast in the north, Kirov Oblast in the east, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and Ivanovo Oblast in the south, and Yaroslavl Oblast in the west. The main rivers are the Volga and the Kostroma. Much of the area is covered by forests, making it one of the main timber-producing regions in Europe.
