A maiko is a beginner geisha. They are usually around 15 to 20 years old. The training to become a maiko is usually around 10 months long.[1][2][3] Maiko, the apprentice geisha, dedicate themselves to honing their cultural and entertainment skills. Their attire is deliberately striking, designed to draw attention away from their still-developing expertise. Maiko reside in the "mother's" house and rely on a modest stipend provided by the geisha establishment.[4]
