A shaman is a kind of medicine man who practices shamanism. Shamans were believed to be able to talk to the spirit world, usually animal spirits. Shamans "are ... thought to have the ability to heal the sick, [and] to (talk with or) communicate with the otherworld, and often to (travel with, or) escort the souls of the dead to [another world where our spirit can go, or] that otherworld", according to media.[4]

In some tribes shamanism is important such as the Yanomamis (a Venezuelan tribe in the Venezuelan forest).
