Steven Lee Cropper (October 21, 1941 – December 3, 2025), also known as Steve "The Colonel" Cropper, was an American guitarist, songwriter and producer. He was best known as the guitarist with Booker T. & the M.G.'s who made instrumental music for singers such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. He sometimes also helped make records by these singers. He also became known as a member of the Blues Brothers band.[1] Rolling Stone lists him 36th on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.[2]
Cropper died on December 3, 2025 at a rehabilitation center in Nashville, Tennessee while recovering from a fall at the age of 84.[3]
