Characters

Main

  • Milli (voiced by Sophia Fox in most season one episodes and Madeline Rose Yen in two season one episodes and in seasons two through four) is a 6-year-old girl. Her primary abilities are patterns and measurement. Her pigtails (nicknamed "ponytails") can be used as rulers. She is often depicted as stronger than her teammates, which is obvious in seasons two through four.
  • Geo (voiced by Ethan Kempner in the first three seasons and by Juan Mirt in season four) is Milli's older brother. His primary ability is shapes. He uses a blueprint for the thing that needs to be built, and then interact with the child viewing the show to figure out which building supplies are needed to fill in the shape belt by singing Super Shapes!
  • Bot (voiced by Donovan Patton) is a green robot who is Milli and Geo's best friend and primary caretaker. He loves to sing and dance and has a fun-loving, childlike personality. His abilities are more functional than math-related. His arms and legs can be extended to reach things, by saying "Arms Extendo" or "Legs Extendo". He has a small robot radar (like a satellite dish) on his head to receive calls (called the Umi Alarm). He also has a screen on his front (called a "Belly Belly Belly Screen") that they can see videos/pictures on as well as have a video call with someone who needs their help. He also has a storage compartment on the back of his body, called a Bot-o-mat, which frequently is carrying whatever the team happens to need. In each episode, he is introduced, usually by Milli, as their Best Robot Friend.
  • UmiCar (voiced by P. T. Wheatley) is the team's orange car that talks by only his name who drives the team wherever their help is needed. He also beeps. UmiCar has been shown as not being a character in many early season 1 episodes, but since he gained a face, becomes a character rather than an object.

Production

Early development

In late 2005, Soo Kim (who worked on Blue's Clues), Michael T. Smith (who worked on Spongebob Squarepants), and Jennifer Twomey had an idea. Their idea was to create a show about tiny superheroes. By April 20, 2006, the team made a CGI-animated pilot called "The Umizumiz" at Nickelodeon Animation Studio to go pitch to the Noggin channel. The pilot taught preschoolers early math skills as well as problem solving. At the time, the series was set to premiere on Noggin in the 2007-08 television season.

Pickup by Nickelodeon

In February 2007, Nickelodeon had picked the pilot up for a full series of twenty episodes. Since the show was a hybrid of live-action and CGI animation, it was hard to make. By July 2007, the show was renamed to Team Umizoomi, a more simpler name, and was renewed for a second season in advance. The first half of season one episodes were completed in 2008; by June 2009 all of season one was completed. Production for the second season started immediately after. Animation was done by Curious Pictures, who also co-produced the show along with Nickelodeon Animation Studio.

Premiere on Nickelodeon

Team Umizoomi was first teased in fall 2009, and set for a January 2010 release date. The show premiered on January 25, 2010, on Nickelodeon, and six days later on the Nick Jr. Channel. The second season premiered on October 18, 2010. During the first season era, Team Umizoomi was renewed for a third season ahead of season two's premiere. The third season premiered in October 2011.

Cancellation

In 2012, a fourth season was announced, which premiered on February 4, 2013, on Nickelodeon. By 2014, Nickelodeon announced that the series would not be getting a fifth season, due to episodes taking longer to air. The series aired its final episode, "Umi Rescue Copter", on April 24, 2015.
