WWE Hell in a Cell was a yearly professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event made by WWE. The first event took place in 2009, replacing No Mercy in the early October slot of WWE's PPV calendar.[1] In 2012, WWE announced that Hell in a Cell would move to late October, leaving only one pay-per-view in October. the 2018 event was held in September, while the 2021 and 2022 event were held in June.[2]

The show's concept was based on WWE's well-known Hell in a Cell match, in which wrestlers fought inside a 20-foot (6-metre) high roofed cell structure surrounding the ring and ringside area.[1][3][4] Each main event match of the card was contested as a Hell in a Cell match. "Hell in a Cell" was chosen over "No Escape", "Locked Up" and "Rage in a Cage".[1][4]

Since it began, the event has been held only in indoor arenas in the United States. Championship matches happened on every card. Under the brand extension, WWE assigned its performers to either Raw or SmackDown, which caused matches to be set up between wrestlers on the same show (except for the 2011–2015 events, since there was no brand split then).[5]

The 2022 event was the last Hell in a Cell event produced, as it was replaced by Night of Champions in 2023.[6][7] However, in 2024, WWE brought back the Bad Blood event, which featured the Hell in a Cell match as the main event.[8]

Concept

In this PPV, all main events were fought as Hell in a Cell matches, in which the ring and ringside area were surrounded by a 20-foot high roofed cell structure. This type of match had no disqualifications or countouts, and the escape rule from steel cage matches also did not apply. The only way to win was by pinfall or submission inside the ring.
