Worksop is a town in Nottinghamshire, England. It is on the edge of Sherwood Forest and is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Dukeries" because it is close to several large country houses and estates.[1] The town is the largest in the district of Bassetlaw.

History

People have lived in the Worksop area since ancient times. The town grew during the Middle Ages and later became known for coal mining, farming and local industries.[2]

In the 1800s and 1900s mining became one of the main employers in the town. The last local pit closed in the 1990s.

Landmarks

Worksop has several historic buildings and places, including:

  • Worksop Priory – a medieval church built in the 1100s.[3]
  • Mr Straw's House – a National Trust property showing life in the early 1900s.[4]
  • Clumber Park – a large country park close to the town.
  • The Chesterfield Canal – runs through Worksop with paths and visitor areas.

Community

The town centre has shops, markets, cafes and local businesses. There are parks, sports centres and community facilities. Schools in the town include Outwood Academy Valley and Outwood Academy Portland.

Transport

Worksop railway station has trains to Sheffield, Lincoln and Nottingham.[5] Buses link the town with nearby villages and towns. Major roads include the A57 and the A60.
