Rajgir (fillimisht i njohur si Girivraj) është një qytet dhe zonë e njohur në distriktin e Nalanda-s në shtetin indian të Biharit. Qyteti i Rajgirit (në lashtësi Rajagṛha; në gjuhën pali: Rajagaha; në gjuhën hindi: राजगृह) ishte kryeqyteti i parë i mbretërisë së Magadha-s, një shtet i përfshirë në Perëndorinë Maurjane. Data e origjinës së krijimit të tij është e panjohur, megjithatë në qytet është zbuluar qeramikë që daton nga vitit 1000 p.e.s. Kjo zonë është e shquar për Xhainizmin dhe Budizmin[2] si një vendet e parapëlqyer të Mahavira-s dhe Gautama Budës dhe konferenca e mirënjohur "Atanatiya" u zhvillua në ‘Vulture's Peak’.

Rajgiri është i lidhur me Patna-n nëpërmjet Bakhtiarpur-it me hekurudhë dhe rrugë. Bakhtiarpur-i qëndron midis Patnas dhe Mokameh. Rajgiri është rreth 100 km si nga Patna ashtu dhe Mokameh. Është i vendosur në një luginë të gjelbër të rrethuar nga kodrat shkëmbore Rajgir. Një linjë e përditshme hekurudhore, Shramjeevi Express e lidh Rajgirin me kryeqytetin indian New Delhi.
Emri Rajgir rrjedh nga Rajagṛiha 'shtëpia e mbretit' ose "shtëpia mbretërore", ose mbase fjala rajgir mund ta rrjedh thjesht nga kuptimi i drejtpërdrejtë "mali mbretëror". Ishte kryeqyteti i lashtë i mbretërisë deri në shekullin e V p.e.s., kur Udayin-i (460-440 p.e.s.), djali Ajatshatru-së, e zhvendosi kryeqytetin në Pataliputra.[3] Në atë kohë, ai quhej Rajgrih, që përkthehet 'shtëpia e mbrerisë'. Shishunaga themeloi Dinastinë Shishunaga në vitin 413 p.e.s. me Rajgirin si kryeqytetin fillestar përpara se të zhvendosej në Pataliputra.
Rajgiri është gjithashtu i famshëm për lidhjen e tij me mbretërit maurjanë, Bimbisara dhe Ajatashatru. Ajatashatru, këtu mbajti në robëri babain e tij Bimbsara. Burimet nuk bien dakord se cili nga bashkëkohësit mbreëtërorë të Gautama Budës qe përgjegjës për shkatërrimin e tij, Bimbisara apo Ajatashatru. Ajatashatru-së i atribuohet zhvendosja e kryeqytetit në Pataliputra (Patna moderne).
Eposi i Mahabaratës e quan atë Girivraja dhe tregon historinë e mbretit të tij, Jarasandha dhe betejën e tij me Vëllezërit Pandava dhe aleatin e tyre Krishna. Jarasandha e kishte origjinën nga ky vend, u mund 17 herë nga Krishna. Herën e 18-të Krishna e la fushën e betejës pa luftuar.[4] Për këtë Krishna është quajtur 'ranachorh' (ai që ka lënë fushën e betejës).[5] Mahabarata tregon për një ndeshje luftimi midis Bhima-s (një nga Pandavat) dhe Jarasandha-s, mbreti i atëhershëm i Magadha-s. Jarasandha ishte i pamposhtshëm pasi trupi i tij mund të ribashkohej me çdo pjesë të këputur. Sipas legjendës, Bhima e ndau Jarasandha-n në dy dhe i hodhi dy gjysmat në krahët e kundër të tyre që të mos bashkoheshin. Ka një Akhara e Jarasandha-s (vend ku praktikohen artet marciale).
Përmendet gjithashtu në shkrimet xhainiste dhe budiste, që japin një seri emrash vendi, po pa kontekst gjeografik. Përpjekja për ti gjetur këta vende është e bazuar gjerësisht në referenca të tyre dhe vende të tjera në veprat e pelegrinëve budistë kinezë, veçanërisht Faxian dhe Xuan Zang. Bazuar te Xuan Zangu siti është ndarë në Rajgirin e ri dhe të vjetër. Ky i fundit qëndron brenda një lugine dhe është i rrethuar nga kodra të ulëta, Kodrat Rajgir. Është i kufizuar nga një ledh dheu (fortifikimi i brendshëm), me të cilin është lidhur fortifikimi i jashtëm, një kompleks muresh ciklopikë që shtrihen me ndërprerje të mëdha përgjatë kreshtës së kodrave. Rajgiri i ri kufizohet nga një tjetër ledh më i madh jashtë hyrjes veriore të luginës pranë qytetit modern. Këtu Buda kaloi mjaft muaj duke medituar dhe predikuar në Gridhra-kuta ('Kodra e Shkabave'). Ai bëri disa predikime të famshme dhe inicioi mbretin Bimbisara të Magadhas dhe të tjerë të shumtë në budizëm. Në një nga kodrat ndodhet Shpella Saptparni, ku u zhvillua Këshilli i Parë Budist nën drejtimin e Maha Kassapa-s.
Ai është i shenjtë për kujtimin e themeluesve të të dy besimeve: Xhainizmit dhe Budizmit dhe lidhet me figurat historike të Mahavira-s dhe Budës.
Mahavira, tirthankara i 24-rt xhainist (shenjt i ndriçuar) kaloi katërmbëdhjetë vjet të jetës së tij në Rajgir dhe Nalanda, duke kaluar Chaturma-t (d.m.th. 4 muaj e stinës së shirave) në një vend të vetëm në Rajgir (Rajgruhi) dhe pjesën tjetër në vende në afërsi. Ishte kryeqyteti i një nga shravakëve (ndjekësve) të tij mbretit Shrenik. Kështu Rajgiri është një vend shumë i rëndësishëm për xhainistët. Tirthankara i njëzetë xhainist Munisuvrata supozohet se ka lindur këtu. Një tempull i vjetër (rreth 1200 vjeçar) kushtuar Munisuvrat Bhagwan-it është gjithashtu i pranishëm bashkë me tempuj të tjerë xhainistë. Ky tempull është gjithashtu një vend për katër Kalyanaka-t e Bhagwan Munisuvratnath-it.
Qyteti është në një luginë të rrethuar nga shtatë kodra: Vaibhara, Ratna, Saila, Sona, Udaya, Chhatha dhe Vipula.
Rajgiri është zhvilluar edhe si një rezort shëndeti dhe dimëror për shkak të pellgjeve me ujë të ngrohtë. Këto banja thuhet se përmbajnë disa veti mjeksore që ndihmojnë në kurimin e shumë sëmundjeve të lëkurës. Shpella Saptparni është gjithashtu burim i Burimeve të Ujit të Ngrohtë Rajgir që ka veti kuruese dhe është i shenjtë për hindutë, xhainistët dhe budistët. Një tjetër tërheqje e rajonit është teleferiku që të ngjit në Stupën Vishwa Shanti (Pagoda e Paqes), Makhdoom Kund dhe manastiret e ndërtuara nga budistët japonezë në krye të Kodrave Ratnagiri.
Temperatura maksimale është 44 °C, ndërsa minimalja 20 °C. Në dimër temperatura maksimale është 28 °C, ndërsa minimalja 6 °C. Rajgiri ka 1 860 mm reshje (mesi i qershorit deri në mesin e shtatorit) Stina e thatë dhe e nxehtë ndodh nga tetori deri në marsj.
Shpella e famshme Son Bhandar është e vendosur në Rajgir, distrikti Nalanda në shtetin e Biharit. Grupi i shpellave Son Bhandar ka dy shpella të njohura si shpella lindore dhe perëndimore. Shpellat Son Bhandar janë të lidhura me xhainizmin dhe mendohet se i përkasin shekullit të III-IV të e.s.
Këto shpella u inspektuan për herë të parë nga Cunninghum që konkludoi se kishin analogji me shpellat Saptparni të besimit budist. Pas Cunninghum-it mjaft studiues e vizituan këtë vend dhe disa mendojnë se ai lidhet me Budizmin. Pas disa kohësh të gjitha lidhjet me Budizmin u refuzuan për shkak të një mbishkrimi të gjetur në murin jugor të shpellës.
Sipas këtij mbishkrimi këto shpella u ndërtuan me frymëzimin e një Jain Muni Vair-i për asketikët xhainistë. Gjithashtu në këto shpella janë të skalitura skulpturat e tirthankarëve. Nga aspekti arkitekturor; këto shpella janë analoge me shpellën Nagarjuni dhe Shpellat Barabar të Periudhës Maurjane. Kështu, se koha e ndërtimit nuk duhet të ndryshoi shumë nga shpellat e lartpërmendura.
Këto shpella duhet të jenë të lidhura me sektin Digambara të Xhainizmit siç shkroi Xuan Zangu në librin e tij rreth Kodrës Vaibhar të Rajgirit që vendi ishte i zënë nga murgj xhainistë Digambara për qëllime meditimi. Pas disa shekujsh këto shpella u konvertuan nga hindutë pasi nga tuma e një shpelle u gjet skulptura e Vishnut.[7]
Historikisht, Rajgiri ka qenë një vende shumë i rëndësishëm i Xhainizmit, si kryeqytet i shumë perandorive. Tërheqjet kryesore turistike përfshijnë muret e lashta të qytetit nga periudha e Ajatshatru-së, Burgu i Bimbisar-it, Akhara e Jarasandha-s, Kodra Gridakuta, shpella Son Bhandara[8] dhe tempujt xhainistë në pesë maja.[7]
Rajgiri është i famshëm për burimet e tij të ujit të ngrohtë, lokalisht të njohur si Brahmakund, një vend i shenjtë për hindutë. Një tjetër tërheqje e rëndësishme është Pagoda e Paqes, Stupa Vishwa Shanti, e ndërtuar në vitin 1969, një nga 80 pagodat e paqes të ndërtuara në botë për të përhapur mesazhin e paqes dhe mos-dhunës. Teleferiku që të çon te ajo është një tjetër tërheqje.
Tempulli japonez ndodhet përkrahë Venu Vana-s. Venu Vana është një pyll artificial, ku mund të shijohet paqje dhe të meditohet. Dhe Makhdoom Kund-i i famshëm. Sri Ramakrishna Matha është një organizazë shpirtërore jo politike, që është angazhuar me forma të ndryshme bamirësie dhe veprimtarish shoqërore.
Muzeu i Trashëgimisë së Rajgirit është një tjetër vend interesi, i përuruar së fundmi nga Nitish Kumar.[9]
Sipas censusit indian të vitit 2011,[10] Rajgiri kishte një popullis prej 41 587 banorësh. Meshkujt përbëjnë 53% të popullsisë ndërsa femrat 47%. Rajgiri ka një nivel mesatar alfabetizmi prej 52%, më i ulët se mesatarja kombëtare prej 59.5%: alfabetizmi mashkullor është 61%, ndërsa ai femëror është 41%. Në Rajgir, 19% e popullsisë është nën moshën 6 vjeçare. Por niveli i alfabetizmit mesatar të Rajgirit është duke u rritur.
Korporata e Zhvillimit të Turizmit të Shtetit të Biharit mundëson shërbime udhëtimi nga kryeqyteti i shtetit Patna për të vizituar itinerarin Bodh (Bodhgaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Vaishali, Kesaria, Lumbini, Kushinagari, Sarnathi), itinerarin Xhainist (Rajgir, Pawapuri) dhe itinerarin sikist në Bihar. Gjithashtu, korporata zotëron hotele dhe shtëpi itinerari në vendet përkatëse turistike. Këta hotele janë të disponueshëm për turistët me çmime të arsyeshme.
Nalanda International Cricket Stadium është një stadium i propozuar kriketi në qytet. Në 2013, u shpall nga kryeministri i Nitish Kumar se në Rajgir do të ndërtohej një stadium ndërkombëtar kriketi.[11][12] Pas përfundimit stadiumi do të jetë shtëpia e ekipit të kriketit të Biharit.[13][14][15]
