生平
威廉·鮑威爾出生於1892年7月29日，生於賓夕法尼亞的匹茲堡市，是家中的獨生子。鮑威爾一直到十歲以前都和家人居住在匹茲堡，後來由於父親工作的原因全家搬到了堪薩斯市。他的父母都沒有舞台演出方面的經驗，愛爾蘭籍的母親是個音樂家，做會計師的父親希望他能找一個法律方面的工作。然而，鮑威爾在高中時代表現出了對戲劇事業的興趣和天賦，他參加各種演出俱樂部以及舉行演講。[1]等他畢業以後，在他姨媽的支持下他前往紐約加入了美國戲劇藝術學院。好幾年的時間裡，他都在舞台上表演喜劇或是參與巡演公司的演出。後來他曾經參加無聲電影夏洛克·福爾摩斯的演出，後來他在有聲電影領域大獲成功，拍攝過歌舞大王齊格飛等奧斯卡獲獎電影。當他成為好萊塢明星之後，他在自己位於好萊塢的住所附近買下一棟房子送給父母，讓他們幫自己打理生意。[1]
鮑威爾同瑪娜·洛伊進行了很多合作，他們一起拍攝過《瘦子》系列電影。這個系列一共有5部影片，第一部瘦子電影曾幫他贏得了奧斯卡獎提名。在一段長達14年的時期里，鮑威爾同洛伊兩人組成的搭檔一共拍攝了14部影片。他的第一任妻子Eileen Wilson是一名舞台劇演員，而第二任妻子為嘉露·林拔。在兩人離婚後他又打算迎娶珍·哈露，不過由於女方突然去世而沒能如願，哈露死的時候只有26歲。雖然沒有丈夫的名分，他還是為女方支付了葬禮的帳單。而且在埋藏哈露的教堂的地下室內，還為鮑威爾留下了一間空的墓室，只不過那個墓室始終沒有投入使用。最後，他遇到了來自米高梅的新人黛安娜·劉易斯（英語：Diana Lewis），雙方一起渡過了一段長達44年的時間，一直到男方去世為止。[2]
