Fíu de los actores Harry Stockwell y Nina Olivette y hermanu del tamién desapaecíu actor Guy Stockwell.
En cine, actuó en Sandino, The Manchurian Candidate y The Dunwich Horror.
La so carrera en televisión foi muncho más exitosa, actuando en munches series tanto como convidáu ocasional como parte del repartu habitual. Como na serie Stargate SG-1 nel papel d'un científicu del planeta Kelownan y mentor de Jonas Queen (Corin Nemec) y Battlestar Galáctica como John Cavil, antagonista principal de la serie.
La so participación mas conocida y que lo fixo famosu, mientres 5 temporaes, foi na serie de ciencia ficción Quantum Leap dende 1989 a 1993, xunto a Scott Bakula. Equí escontra'l personaxe de "Albert Calavicci".
