David Prain

Sir David Prain (* 11. Juli 1857 in Fettercairn, Kincardineshire; † 16. März 1944 in Whyteleafe, Surrey) war ein schottischer Botaniker. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „Prain“.

Prain studierte an der Universität Aberdeen. Er war von 1887 bis 1889 Kustos des Herbariums von Kalkutta. Von 1905 bis 1922 war er Direktor des Botanischen Gartens in Kew.

Prain war Herausgeber der Bände 133 bis 146 des Curtis’s Botanical Magazine (1907 bis 1920) sowie der Bände 28 bis 30 von Hooker's Icones Plantarum (1905 bis 1994). Auch die Bände 6(2) und 9 der Flora of Tropical Africa von Daniel Oliver gab er heraus. Für dieses Werk bearbeitete er die Teile „Euphorbiaceae“ (in Band 6(1), zusammen mit Nicholas Edward Brown und John Hutchinson) sowie „Cycadaceae“ (in Band 6(2)).

Ehrungen

Am 6. Februar 1888 wurde Prain zum Mitglied („Fellow“) der Royal Society of Edinburgh gewählt.^[1] Am 11. Mai 1905 wurde Prain als Mitglied („Fellow“) in die Royal Society gewählt.^[2] Seit 1909 war er korrespondierendes Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, seit 1920 Mitglied der National Academy of Sciences. 1935 bekam er die Linné-Medaille der Linnean Society of London verliehen.

1912 wurde er als Knight Bachelor geadelt.

Die Pflanzengattung Prainea King ex Hook. f. aus der Familie der Maulbeergewächse (Moraceae) ist nach ihm benannt worden.^[3]
