The 77th annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 2 to 12 September 2020, at Venice Lido in Italy.[4] Albeit in a "more restrained format" due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival held all its screenings with public presence.[5][6]

Australian actress Cate Blanchett was Jury President of the main competition.[7] Italian actress Anna Foglietta hosted the opening and closing nights of the festival.[8] The Golden Lion was awarded to Nomadland by Chloé Zhao.[9]
The festival opened with The Ties by Daniele Luchetti, the first Italian film after 11 years to open the festival.[10] And closed with You Came Back by Stefano Mordini.
