In 1951, the town was renamed after the revolutionary leader Gotse Delchev.[2] It had hitherto been called Nevrokop[3] (in Bulgarian: Неврокоп, Nevrokop; in Greek: Άνω Νευροκόπι, romanized: Ano Nevrokopi, lit. 'Upper Nevrokopi'; and in Turkish: Nevrokop).
Nearby are the remains of a walled city established by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. The town was a kaza in the Siroz sanjak of the Salonica vilayet before the Balkan Wars.
