Hartford Township was organized in 1867. The township shares its name with a city and county in Connecticut and with sixteen townships and villages across the country. A village named Hartford was also found in section 33 of neighboring Ward township. A post office in the village of Hartford was opened in 1870 but is no longer in operation.[4]
