Shamkan

Shamkan (Persian: شامكان)[lower-alpha 1] is a city in, and the capital of, Shamkan District of Sheshtamad County, Razavi Khorasan province, Iran.[4] It also serves as the administrative center for Shamkan Rural District.[5]

At the 2006 census, its population was 2,102 in 541 households, when it was a village in Shamkan Rural District of the former Sheshtamad District of Sabzevar County.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 2,439 people in 710 households.[7] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 1,882 people in 581 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district.[2]
In February 2019, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Sheshtamad County and divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with the city of Sheshtomad as its capital.[4] The village of Shamkan was later elevated to the status of a city and became the capital of Shamkan District.[8]
