Before independence of Pakistan in 1947, it was populated by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. After the independence, the minority Hindus and Sikhs migrated to India while the Muslim refugees from India settled in the village for some time and then moved to nearby towns and cities.
Owing to its rich historical heritage, the village served as a cultural and economic hub within its vicinity for numerous years. However, a shift occurred following the division of the union council Saeed Matto, which had its headquarters in the village. Concurrently, the development of the nearby town of Nao Mail along the Tando Muhammad Khan-Mirpur Bathoro Road also altered the dynamics of the area.
The existing population of the village Syed Matto Shah is mainly Muslim and Hindu tribes, including Sathias, Siddis (also Qambranis or Sheedis), Solangis and Kolhis.
