Perspective

Although it was always the Society of Jesus' desire to return to the lands of such a rich mission, this was not achieved for more than a century and a half.

During the government of Don Carlos Antonio López, in 1843, a mission arrived from the Argentine-Chilean Jesuit Province with the desire to explore the possibilities of establishing a Jesuit House in Paraguay. This attempt failed due to disagreements with the government of Don Carlos A. López, even though the latter had expressed his desire for a Jesuit to be the tutor of his eldest son, Francisco Solano.

Later, in 1864, another mission arrived, but the dark clouds of the War of the Triple Alliance were already looming over the nation's horizon, and once again this mission was unable to establish a home in our country.

The intense and persevering efforts of the Bishop of Asunción, Monsignor Juan Sinforiano Bogarín bear fruit, and on January 4, 1927, a mission arrives in Paraguay with the objective of establishing and founding a Jesuit House and Community in our country. The religious are Father Felipe Lérida (Superior), Eustaquio Zurbitu and Antonio Crespi and the Coadjutor Brothers Leonardo Mühn and Justo Farías.

They were received by the Bayonese Fathers of the Congregation of Our Lady of Betharram (San José School) and then moved to the house kindly donated by Mrs. Asunción Martínez de Bogarín, on Colombia Avenue, today Mcal. López, No. 1201. A little later, and for a short time, they occupied a house on General Díaz Street No. 288 until they acquired definitive ownership on Colón Street No. 741 and Ygatimi Avenue, consisting of three lots, with a family building, to which would later be added the donation made by Mr. Gualberto Cardús Huerta of a valuable lot on the corner of Colón and Carlos A. López Avenue.

The chosen property was located, at that time, on the edge of the downtown area, with the only streets with stone pavement being the main streets in the area: Colón and Montevideo streets, where a tram line laboriously ascended and descended, turning at Ygatimi Avenue and then going up Colón to turn west again along the double-decker Carlos A. López Avenue, also cobblestone, to the Navy shipyards in Puerto Sajonia. All the other streets were either dirt or grass.

The properties acquired totaled a very valuable complex in a privileged location for the religious and educational apostolic tasks that the Jesuits wished to establish in those early days.
