Dàndàn yōuqíng (Chinese: 淡淡幽情) is a Mandarin Chinese studio album recorded by Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng, released on 2 February 1983. It was first distributed by Polydor Records from Hong Kong and Kolin Records from Taiwan.[1] It contains twelve songs adapted from classical Chinese poems written during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The album experienced commercial success throughout Asia, selling over 5 million copies as of 2008 according to Xinhua News Agency.

English names

Various sources translate the name of the album into different English-language names. The journal Chime: European Foundation For Chinese Music Research translates the name to Passionate Feelings.[2] Sinorama (now Taiwan Panorama),[3][4] Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women: The Twentieth Century – 1912–2000,[5] and Encyclopædia Britannica translate it to Faded Feelings.[6] China Radio International translates it to Light Exquisite Feeling.[7]

Critical reception

In March 2012, Pu Xiqian from the China News Service called this album a "perfect match" of "outstanding" composition and ancient Chinese poems.[8] One of producers of the album, Deng Xiquan, won the Best Record Producer Award at the 1983 RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards.[9]

Commercial performance

The album received a platinum award from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry Hong Kong (IFPIHK) in 1984.[10] As of August 2008, the album has sold over 5 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums in Asia.[11]
