The earliest recorded evidence of Filipino presence in the continental United States dates back to October 18, 1587, when the first group of "Luzones Indios" arrived in Morro Bay, California.[1] California boasts the largest Filipino American population in the United States, with around 1.6 million individuals, which constitutes approximately 38% of the total Filipino population in the nation. The majority of the Filipino community in the state is primarily located in the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Filipinos have a long and rich heritage in the state, with their presence tracing back to the 18th century, and they have made substantial contributions to various facets of California's history and culture, including the farm labor movement. The Philippines, along with California, were apart of the Spanish Empire. Galleons traversed the oceans, transporting wealth from the Philippines to Mexico and ultimately to Spain. Spanish and Filipino mariners aboard galleons reached the coasts of California as early as 1587.[2]
