A ground collision (also known as a terrain collision, or simply GCOL) is a collision that occurs while an aircraft is taxiing to or from its runway. Ground collisions occur when an aircraft collides with another aircraft and/or structure on the runway.[1][2]

Causal factors

  • lack of sufficient training for aviation staff
  • lack of sufficient signage and lighting
  • lack of space at various parts of the aircraft's pathway, especially the maneuvering area[3]

  1. All deaths directly attributable to the collision are counted as fatalities.
  2. In general, only occupants of an aircraft directly involved in the ground collision are counted as survivors. Bystanders who received nonfatal or no injuries, such as airshow spectators, participants in a military exercise, occupants of nearby noninvolved aircraft, and/or airport ground crew, are not included unless their involvement in the incident is particularly notable.
