History

The Republic of Haiti, which gained independence from France in 1804, and of Libya, which gained independence from Italy in 1951, have maintained diplomatic relations since 1979.

The corresponding joint declaration was notified to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York on January 18, 1979, by the Permanent Representatives of both countries.[1]

No diplomatic or consular missions have been established in the other country. Since the formalization of bilateral relations, no particular activity has been observed in the political, economic, or cultural spheres.

In the center of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, is Haiti Street, whose name was chosen as a gesture of gratitude for the support Haiti gave to Libya's independence as a unified state at the United Nations in 1949.[2]

Haiti's Permanent Representative, Emile Saint-Lot, cast the deciding vote in the United Nations Security Council against the plan to turn Libya into three separate states under foreign control (Bevin-Sforza Plan).[3]
