Jhanak is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on StarPlus on 20 November 2023 and streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar.[1][2] Produced under Magic Moments Motion Pictures, it is an inspiration of Star Jalsha's Bengali series Jol Nupur. The series formerly had Hiba Nawab and Krushal Ahuja in lead roles.[3] Since June 2025, it has Riya Sharma in the titular role as Jhanak (Hiba Nawab)'s daughter, Jhanak 2.0 and also stars Arjit Taneja and Twinkle Arora.[4] The second generation is a loose adaptation of Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ishti Kutum. The show also featured Megha Chakraborty as Ishani in a parallel storyline.[5] Following the positive response to Ishani's storyline, it was developed into a standalone show titled Ishani from 3 July 2025 onwards.[6]

Perspective

After her mother's death, Jhanak is forced to marry her cousin Arshi’s fiancé, Aniruddh, to escape her stalker, Tejas. Though Aniruddh and Arshi were together for seven years, Jhanak enters their lives under distressing circumstances and begins working as a maid in the Bose household. While some treat her kindly, many insult her. Despite Arshi’s presence, Jhanak and Aniruddh grow close and become intimate while he is intoxicated in Kashmir.

Their secret marriage is exposed, causing tension, but Arshi stays. Jhanak moves to Mumbai to pursue dance and later returns claiming she’s pregnant with Aniruddh’s child. This turns out to be a tumour. Aniruddh suffers a heart attack, and Jhanak is presumed dead after being targeted by Srishti and Tejas. She is rescued by Kulbhushan, Brijbhushan’s look-alike, and learns Brijbhushan is her real father. Kulbhushan had stolen his identity with Srishti and Urvashi’s help. Determined to expose them, Jhanak returns disguised as Nutan. During an anniversary celebration, their truth is revealed. Kulbhushan murders Brijbhushan, and Aniruddh, still in love, falsely claims he has cancer to marry Jhanak. When she finds out the truth, she leaves for Mumbai with Aditya Kapoor.

Kulbhushan’s goons kidnap Jhanak, but she escapes. Meanwhile, Bose family property disputes arise, and Jhanak ends up in Gujarat disguised as Vihaan’s late wife Avni. She’s shocked to discover Aniruddh is Vihaan’s friend. At a family wedding, Arshi reveals Jhanak’s real identity. A wedding is arranged for Jhanak and Vihaan, but she flees.

Captured again by Kulbhushan’s men, Jhanak is saved by an elderly couple and ends up in a red-light area, escaping to a police station. Choton brings her back to the Bose house, shocking the family. At Arshi’s baby shower, Srishti publicly apologises and claims to be Jhanak’s mother. Later, Jhanak becomes caretaker for Arshi’s baby and faces abuse from the family. Jhanak continues to suffer humiliation until she learns Arshi’s baby was swapped. During Holi, she exposes the baby swap and searches for the real child. Meanwhile, Laal divorces Bipasha after her father, Sarveshwar, reappears. Bipasha conspires with him to send Jhanak to Banaras.

Jhanak finds the man who stole Arshi's baby and tries to expose him. Meanwhile, Mimi and Anirban plan their wedding, and a false case is filed against Jhanak. She is arrested, but Aniruddh and Mimi testify in her support, exposing the constant mental abuse Jhanak faced in the Bose household. Inspector Sanjay Sarkar reveals that certain police officers aided Shubho, Tanuja and Arshi in framing Jhanak by suppressing evidence. The judge ultimately dismisses the case due to lack of evidence and clears Jhanak of all accusations. Shubho, Tanuja and Arshi are left humiliated as the truth comes out and justice prevails for Jhanak.

Arshi meets Siddharth Chatterjee and quickly falls for him, while Ani leaves the Bose house and starts living in a live-in relationship with Jhanak. When Ani discovers Arshi's growing closeness with Sid, he insists that Arshi divorce him so he can marry Jhanak and she can be with Sid. The divorce proceedings almost reach completion, but Sid betrays Arshi and runs away with his girlfriend, leaving her devastated. Ani and Jhanak return to the Bose house and begin their marriage functions. However, on the wedding day, Arshi arrives back at the house and refuses to grant Ani the divorce. Heartbroken, Jhanak runs away and, on her way, finds Arshi and Ani's kidnapped daughter, Aditi, who has been nickname "Moon". She rescues her, boards a bus, and meets Parashar, who saves both Jhanak and Moon from Kulbhushan's goons and takes them to Shimulbuni. Over time, Jhanak and Parashar grow close as he supports her and helps raise Moon like his own daughter.

5 years later

Ani and Arshi are still married, but they share a cold and distant relationship. Ani remains heartbroken, living in the memories of Jhanak, while in Shimulbuni, Parashar has become a father-figure to Moon and Jhanak raises her as her own child. Ani, unaware of Jhanak's presence in Shimulbuni, arrives there for an office project. The two meet again and share an intimate moment. The next day, Ani hears a rumor that Jhanak is Parashar's wife and feels deeply betrayed. Jhanak then reveals the truth; that Moon is actually Ani and Arshi's daughter.

Wanting the best for Moon, she sends her away with Ani to Kolkata despite her own pain. Soon after, Jhanak is poisoned in the village and rushed to the hospital by Parashar and the villagers. Ani arrives, learns the truth that Jhanak and Parashar were never married, and decides to marry Jhanak in the village. Parashar, who is secretly in love with Jhanak, is heartbroken but hides his pain and supports their union.

Ani and Jhanak successfully marry, and soon after, Jhanak confides that she is pregnant with Ani's child. But Ani refuses to believe her, accusing Parashar of being the father. Enraged, disgusted, and shattered by Ani questioning her character and honesty, Jhanak cuts all ties with him for good, after realizing that he is unworthy of her love, and the two go their separate ways.
