  1. France had four teams compete in 1900. Bronze medals were given to the losers of both semifinals; France took both bronze.
  2. In 1992, 12 of the 15 former Soviet Republics competed together as the Unified Team and marched under the Olympic Flag in the Barcelona Games.
  3. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, FR Yugoslavia men's national water polo team participated in two Olympic Games, two World Aquatics Championships, and three FINA World Cups. In 2003, after the country was renamed from FR Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro, the team was also renamed to "Serbia and Montenegro men's national water polo team".
