Mimecast was founded in 2003 by Peter Bauer and Neil Murray. The company started as a provider of cloud-based email management for Google Workspace, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office 365.[6] Bauer, who trained as a Microsoft systems engineer and worked with corporate messaging systems, previously founded tech integration agency FAB Technology in 1997, and sold it in 1999 to Idion Technology Holdings.[7] He became Mimecast's CEO.[8] Murray was previously CTO at Global Technology Services and founder of Pro-Solutions.[9] He became the company's CTO.[10]
In June 2010, Mimecast appointed Dr. Nathaniel Borenstein chief scientist. Borenstein co-created the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) email standard, along with other email systems and software.[11]
On October 16, 2015, Mimecast announced that it filed its registration statement for a proposed initial public offering (IPO).[12] Mimecast began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "MIME" on November 19, 2015. The offering closed on November 24, 2015.[13]
On May 19, 2022, Mimecast was acquired by and become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Magnesium Bidco Limited, an affiliate of Permira Holdings Ltd.[14]
In January 2024, Marc van Zadelhoff replaced Bauer as the company's CEO.[8]

In August 2024, Mimecast acquired AI compliance software provider Aware.[22]

Mimecast started as a cloud-based email management platform for Microsoft's email products,[6] and after a series of acquisitions, expanded to be a more general provider of risk reduction services within organizations. The company sells products in the following four areas: email & collaboration threat protection;[23][24] insider risk management & data protection;[25] data compliance & governance;[22][26] and security awareness & training.[15][27]

Mimecast's global headquarters is based in London.[2] Its US headquarters is in Lexington, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.[1] It lists additional offices in Bengaluru, Cape Town, Dubai, Hilversum, Israel, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Mississauga, Munich, Paris, Singapore, and Sydney.[28] Marc van Zadelhoff is the company's CEO.[8]
Security and privacy breaches
In January 2021, a Mimecast security certificate was revealed to have been compromised, potentially allowing attackers to intercept communications with Microsoft-based email servers.[29][30][31]
