Operation Mahadev was a counter-terrorism operation conducted by Indian security forces on 28 July 2025 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The operation targeted members of the Pakistan-based terrorist group The Resistance Front (TRF), a known offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba.[1]
Background
The operation followed a major terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 28 July 2025, which resulted in the deaths of multiple CRPF personnel and civilians.[2] Intelligence agencies traced the attackers to safehouses on the outskirts of Srinagar, prompting a joint search and elimination operation.[3]
Operation
Operation Mahadev was launched by Indian Army special forces in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF units.[4] It resulted in the neutralization of three high-profile terrorists, including the alleged mastermind "Sulieman", a senior TRF operative.[5]
Reactions
The operation was widely covered in national media and hailed as a significant blow to TRF's operations in Kashmir. Security experts and local leaders praised the swift action by Indian forces.[6]
International Response
Following the incident and subsequent crackdown, the United States designated TRF as a terrorist organization, responding to increased international concern over cross-border terrorism.[7]
