Reset (Chinese: 开端; pinyin: Kāiduān; lit. 'Beginning') is a 2022 Chinese time-travel whodunit series, starring Bai Jingting and Zhao Jinmai in the lead roles.[1][2] It is based on a novel 'Kai Duan' by Qi Dao Jun, and is directed by Sun Molong and Liu Hongyuan. It tells the story of game designer Xiao Heyun and college student Li Shiqing, who are trapped in a time loop after a bus explosion; works together to escape the tragedy.[3][4] On 11 January 2022, the series premiered on Tencent Video, Line TV and Viki.[5][6] It sets record of exceeding fastest 30,000 'Popularity Heat Index' points, and surpassed over 2 Billion views on Tencent.[7][8][9]
By January 2022, it had an average of over 130 Million views per episode on Tencent.[10] It was a critical and commercial success, and won many awards.[11][12] The series success led to its release in South Asian countries.[13][14] In September 2023, producer Hou Hongliang and writer Qidaojun announced a companion series Restart.[15][16]

University student Li Shiqing is riding a local bus on Route 45 when she is caught in a time loop, whereby the loop repeats every time the bus explodes and kills all passengers on board. In one loop Li Shiqing drags fellow passenger Xiao Heyun, a game designer, off the bus before the explosion happens, and this brings him into the time loop with her. The pair are able to disembark from the bus and avoid dying, but the loop still repeats when they fall asleep. They decide that they may have to save everyone on the bus, and work together to investigate the passengers and identify the bomber.
During their investigation, Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun gain appreciation and sympathy for their fellow passengers who come from various walks of life, and whose appearances can be deceiving. In some loops, Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun encounter the police, primarily Deputy Captain Zhang Cheng who is helpful but notices their odd behavior. Although Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun are detained by the police in some loops, they are also able to get information from the police in these encounters.
When the final loop starts, Li Shiqing immediately contacts Zhang Cheng to notify him about the bomb, enabling the police to set up a road block to stop the bus on the bridge. Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun also work together with the other passengers to restrain Tao Yinghong and get her away from the bomb, and talk down Wang Xingde by revealing what they know about Wang Mengmeng's death. They are successful, and Zhang Cheng throws the bomb off the bridge, allowing it to explode in the river. Afterward, the police arrest Wang Mengmeng's assailant, and Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun, now a couple, pay their respects to Wang Mengmeng.[17][18][19]

In 2022, the series trended on the Weibo search,[20][21][22] and earned Bai Jingting 1st rank in the "Character Index List" in drama category.[23][24][25] It has been highly rated on both Douban and IMDb.[26][27][28] In 2022, it remained in the 'Top 5' in both the popularity index and average viewership per episode ratings, according to the annual lists by Yunhe, Datawin, Dengta, Kuyun and Aiman under the suspense drama category.[29][30][31] The mystery, realism and thrilling plot twists was acclaimed.[32] Its popularity sparked discussions on social issues like social responsibility and cyberbullying.[33][34] Bai Jingting presented a piano version of Pachelbel's Canon, the main musical motif of the series, to commemorate its conclusion.[35]
The success of the series led to its release on TrueID Thailand,[36] CS Channel 'Satellite Theater' in Japan,[37] and on Line TV Taiwan.[38] It also got released in South Korea, Indonesia and HongKong.[39][40] It premiered on Netflix in Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.[41]
