This is a timeline of science fiction. While the date of the start of science fiction is debated, this list includes events included in timelines published by expert sources.[a]

The starting point of science fiction depends on the definition used. By the broadest definition it began with the Epic of Gilgamesh (c.2100 BCE), the oldest surviving work of fiction.[1] Seen here is the so-called Flood tablet.
