Transjakarta Corridor 2 is a bus rapid transit corridor in Jakarta, Indonesia, operated by Transjakarta. It connects the Pulo Gadung Bus Terminal in East Jakarta to the Monumen Nasional BRT station in Central Jakarta.

Quick Facts Overview, System ...

The route towards Monumen Nasional goes through Perintis Kemerdekaan, Letjen Suprapto, Imam Sapi'i, Kwini II, Abdul Rahman Saleh, Pejambon, Medan Merdeka Timur, Perwira, Katedral, Ir. H. Djuanda, Veteran III, and Medan Merdeka Utara Streets. In the opposite direction, it travelsvia Medan Merdeka Barat, Medan Merdeka Selatan, and Kwitang Raya Streets, before continuing along Letjen Suprapto Street towards Pulo Gadung. This corridor is integrated with the Pasar Senen railway station, which serves both the KRL Commuterline and intercity train services via Senen Toyota Rangga BRT station, and also with Juanda railway station, serving KRL Commuterline, via Juanda BRT station.

On March 4, 2023, Corridor 2 temporarily relocated its terminus from Harmoni to the Monumen Nasional BRT station, due to the construction of the Jakarta MRT (see #Temporary readjustment).[1][2][3][4]

Early operational

Corridor 2 was inaugurated on January 15, 2006, alongside Corridor 3. The inauguration coincided with the inauguration of Corridor 1 two years earlier.[5][6] The inauguration received high enthusiasm from the people of Jakarta.[7] At the same time, Transjakarta promised that 71 new buses would serve Corridors 2 and 3 in April 2006, three months after the first day of operation.[8]

Route extension

On May 19, 2014, the route was extended by 7.61 kilometers from Pulogadung 1 (now Pulo Gadung) to Ujung Menteng in Bekasi. It was Transjakarta's first BRT corridor to cross the border of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. The new stations were Raya Bekasi KIP, Raya Bekasi Tipar Cakung, Cakung United Tractors, Raya Bekasi Pasar Cakung, Raya Bekasi Cakung Cilincing, Raya Bekasi Pulo Gebang, and Raya Bekasi Ujung Menteng.[9][10] At the time of opening, four stations in Kota Harapan Indah — 2 stations in the estate's entrance and 2 stations near Family Market — were still under construction. They were completed by the end of May 2014.[11]

The extension initially operated as a BRT service coded 2E. It was later redesignated 2B and converted into an integrated non-BRT feeder route, where, in addition to the existing BRT stations, buses also served several pedestrian-level stops on the sidewalk.[12] As of September 19, 2023, however, the route has been converted into a disintegrated non-BRT feeder route, using Metrotrans low-floor buses that only serve pedestrian-level bus stops, with the high-floor BRT stations no longer in use.[13]

Further developments

BRT station revitalization

In early 2020, due to the extension of the Senen Underpass, the Senen BRT station (now known as Senen Toyota Rangga) was relocated to a temporary structure.[14] Following the completion of the underpass extension, Transjakarta began rebuilding the BRT station and renovating its access bridge.[15] The new Senen station reopened on November 22, 2020, featuring upgraded facilities, such as lifts on the renovated pedestrian bridge that has a design resembling the piano keys.[16]

On April 15, 2022, as part of efforts to improve service quality and ensure seamless integration with other modes of transport—such as the KRL Commuterline—and in conjunction with the revitalisation of the Senen BRT station, the Juanda BRT station was temporarily closed for revitalisation works. This closure occurred alongside similar works on stations along Corridors 1, 5, 9, and 11.[17][18] To maintain service during the works, a shuttle bus route coded 2ST was introduced to operate along the Pecenongan–Juanda segment.[17][18] Kwitang BRT station, which had already been demolished in June 2021, and Balai Kota BRT station, which was last renovated in 2020, also went under revitalisation in June 2022, due to both stations being too small to accommodate articulated buses.[19] The line's eastern terminus, Pulo Gadung 1, along with its Corridor 4 counterpart, Pulo Gadung 2, also went under the revitalisation project starting from September 6, 2022.[20]

Kwitang and Balai Kota stations reopened on August 11[21][22] and August 22, 2022[23][24] respectively, followed by Juanda station on March 4, 2023.[25][26] On April 18, 2023, Pulo Gadung 1 station reopened. Its station building was unified with Pulo Gadung 2, creating a single Pulo Gadung station. As a result, passengers are no longer required to exit the paid area to transfer between Corridors 2 and 4.[27]

Subsequently, on June 2, 2023, the Pulo Mas BRT station was also closed for revitalisation.[28] It reopened on October 7, 2023.

Temporary readjustment

Harmoni BRT station was formerly the terminus of Corridor 2. As the busiest station in the network, it also served Corridors 1, 3, and 8. However, due to the construction of Phase 2A of the Jakarta MRT, the Harmoni station was relocated to a temporary structure from March 4, 2023[3], and will remain so until the completion of the MRT works, either in 2027 or 2029. The original permanent building was demolished to make way for the new Harmoni MRT station. The temporary structure doesn't have enough capacity to accommodate high passenger volumes. As a result, Transjakarta decided that it would only serve Corridor 1 and temporarily moved Corridor 2's terminus to the Monumen Nasional BRT station, located near the National Monument.[1][2][4]

Incidents

Two BRT stations on Corridor 2 — Senen (the temporary structure) and Harmoni — were set on fire by protesters during the Omnibus Law protest on October 8, 2020.[30] The new Senen station, along with Kwitang, Gambir (then-named Gambir 1), and several other stations, were also damaged by protesters. As a result, Transjakarta estimated the total losses from the destruction of all 18 affected BRT stations at up to 45 billion rupiah.[31]
