Chinese
Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sru): semantic 扌 (“hand”) + phonetic 叟 (OC *suːʔ).
叟 is the original character, also meaning “to search”, and depicting a hand holding a torch indoors.
Etymology 1
Compare perhaps Burmese ရှာ (hra, “to look for”), ရှု (hru., “to look at”); the former is a stronger semantic match, the latter a stronger phonetic match (Luce 1981).
