"Bad" > "obscene; ferocious; rascal". Its use is most prominent in dialects of Hubei and Hunan, and possibly originates from the ancient dialectal pronunciation of (“bad, evil, bandit”), same as Min Nan (phái(ⁿ), “bad”).

It may be the origin of some uses of (), for example 調皮 (“naughty”), 賴皮 (“shameless”) and 頑皮 (“naughty”).

The Cantonese pronunciation is probably due to confusion with (mau1, “to squat”), as this word is not native to Cantonese.
