   1. having the characteristic of the noun root

      ‎hari (“king”) + ‎-anon → ‎harianon (“royal”)

      ‎tawo (“person”) + ‎-anon → ‎tawhanon (“human”)

   2. (with place nouns) from or of that place

      ‎Bohol + ‎-anon → ‎Bol-anon (“of Bohol; inhabitant of Bohol”)

      ‎bukid (“mountain”) + ‎-anon → ‎bukidnon (“from the mountains; mountain dweller”)

Usage notes

• There are many exceptions to affixing:
  • Usually, if the root word ends in a consonant, the form -non is used instead.

    ‎langit (“heaven”) + ‎-anon → ‎langitnon (“heavenly”)

    ‎dagat (“sea”) + ‎-anon → ‎dagatnon (“marine”)

  • If the root word ends in the vowel /a/ followed by a glottal stop, the latter is removed and the form -n-on is used instead.

    ‎yutà (“land”) + ‎-anon → ‎yutan-on (“earthly”)

    ‎yawà (“devil”) + ‎-anon → ‎yawan-on (“evil”)

  • If the root word ends in a vowel without a glottal stop, one of the forms -hanon, -nhon, or -anon is used. Some roots can even do with two or all of these forms.
