Learned borrowing from Latin Asia, from Ancient Greek Ᾰ̓σῐ́ᾱ (Ăsĭ́ā), from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀯𐀹𐀊 (a-si-wi-ja /⁠aswijaː⁠/), probably from Hittite 𒀸𒋗𒉿 (aš-šu-wa /⁠Aššuwa⁠/) of uncertain origin.
