Etymology

From Latin sēstertius (two-and-a-half), from sēmis (half) + tertius (third), in which “third” refers to the third as: the sestertius was worth two full asses and half of a third. The symbol is derived from the Roman numeral II followed by an S for Latin semis, the whole written with a strikethrough IIS (a common substitution being HS).
