Proper noun

Maaria

  1. a female given name
    • 1840, Kanteletar:2:177 Anna maata, Maariainen:
      anna maata, Maariainen,
      Kiesus, leppe’in levätä;
      niinkuin, Maaria, makasit,
      Kiesus, leppe’in lepäsit!
    • 1974, Maria Vaara, Likaiset legendat, Gummerus, →ISBN, page 173:
      Tällä hetkellä minulla on tärkeätä asiaa Maarialle. Muistan taas, että nimissämme on vain yhden a:n ero. Mutta se ratkaisee paljon. On ihan eri asia olla Neitsyt-Maaria kuin neitsyt-Maria. Olen sen kipeästi tullut monta kertaa huomaamaan.
      I've got some important matters for Maaria. Again I'm reminded of just our names differ only by a single A, but tit matters so much. A Virgin Maaria is very different from a Virgin Maria. I've had to learn that the hard way many times.
  2. A former municipality near Turku in SW Finland, now part of Turku.
