From Ancient Greek Ματθαῖος (Matthaîos), from Biblical Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattiṯyāhū, literally “gift of YHWH (the Lord)”). Compare Theodosius, Deōdatus, Theodōrus, Iōnāthās and Nathanael.
