From Middle High German phert, pherit, pferift (“riding horse”), from Old High German pherit, pfarifrit, parafred, from Late Latin paraverēdus (originally “substitute post horse”). Largely displaced the native word Ross, except in compounds like Rossknedl or Rossfleisch.
