Etymology
(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) From the name “Sahull” and “Sahoel” of a submerged sandbank between Australia and Timor on Dutch maps of the 17th century. From this the continental shelf was given the name “Sahul Shelf”, and the continent including the dry shelf was called Sahul.
