From French Vosges, from Latin Vosegus (in the manuscripts also Vogesus), probably from the name of a Celtic god, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo- (sub-, under) and *segos (force, victory) (compare Middle Irish seg (strength), Welsh (bold, brave), and the place name Segovia).
