arbeid

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch arbeit, from Old Dutch arbeit, arbeith alongside arvit, arvith, from Proto-West Germanic *arbaidi ~ *arbaiþi, from Proto-Germanic *arbaidiz.

Some commentators think that the form with -b- must be due to influence by Old High German arbeit, but this is not certain. The stop could also have to do with a secondary stress that developed early on (and the Old Dutch vowels ei vs. i might confirm this). The same -b- also widely appears in Low German and Central Franconian, which have the same development of West Germanic *b as Dutch.
