Etymology 1

From Middle Low German arbeit, from Old Saxon arvēd.

Compare Norwegian Bokmål arbeid, Swedish arbete, and Faroese arbeiði. A native form of the word is found in Old Danish æruæthæ, from Old Norse erfiði (still in Swedish arvode (salary)).
