Etymology
From Middle High German ūfmachen. Equivalent to auf- + machen.

aufmachen (weak, third-person singular present macht auf, past tense machte auf, past participle aufgemacht, auxiliary haben)

Usage notes
- Aufmachen and zumachen are not in themselves informal. However, the formal language prefers öffnen and schließen, which are in turn rare in colloquial speech (though schließen is common in compounds like abschließen, zuschließen, etc.).
